Scientific Name - Eucalyptus globulus Properties - Decongestant, germicide, antiseptic, astringent, antibacterial, expectorant, respiratory aid, insect repellent, stimulant Common Uses - Pour boiling water over the leaves and drink or inhale the vapor to relieve upper respiratory ailments. Oil can be added to boiling water as well, for inhaling. Leaves may be applied as a poultice for healing skin. The oil is also an effective antibacterial, but must be diluted. 2 teaspoons or less of the oil per pint of water is recommended. Parts Used - Oil from leaves, roots, and bark Locating & Handling - For the oil, tea, or leaves, try a health food store. Check with a local nursery about the potential for growing a tree in your yard. Caution - Toxic in large amounts. Origin - Native to Australia and Tasmania. Probably first used medicinally by Australian aborigines. |
